Tropical foliage plants have become the dominant botanical material in luxury interior design. Their architectural forms, dramatic scale, and relative tolerance for indoor conditions make them uniquely suited to commercial environments. But "relative tolerance" is not the same as "low maintenance" — and the failure to understand the specific requirements of individual species is the most common cause of botanical program failures in commercial interiors.
Light is the single most important variable in the success or failure of any interior plant program. Every other care parameter — watering frequency, fertilization, humidity — is secondary to adequate light. A plant that is receiving insufficient light will decline regardless of how well it is watered or fertilized.

Overwatering is the leading cause of death in interior tropical plants. The instinct to water frequently — reinforced by the visual drama of wilting — leads most non-specialist caretakers to water too often. The correct approach is to water based on soil moisture, not on a fixed schedule, and to allow the top 2–5cm of soil to dry between waterings for most tropical species.
In commercial environments, where plants may be cared for by facilities staff rather than specialist horticulturalists, the most reliable approach is to install moisture meters in each planter and establish clear threshold-based watering protocols. This removes the guesswork and significantly reduces overwatering incidents.
Most tropical foliage species originate in environments with relative humidity of 60–80%. Commercial interiors, particularly those with forced-air heating and cooling, typically maintain humidity levels of 30–50% — below the optimal range for many tropical species. The practical response is to select species that tolerate lower humidity, rather than attempting to raise ambient humidity in a commercial space.
Pest management in commercial interior plant programs requires a different approach than residential care. The goal is prevention and early detection, not reactive treatment. Regular inspection — at minimum monthly, ideally weekly — is the most effective pest management strategy. Most pest infestations that result in plant loss could have been prevented with earlier detection.
